Indian's Leaving Hinduism, Coming to Jesus

An official with Voice of the Martyrs says persecution against Christians continues to increase throughout India. In one recent example, a mob of Hindus in Rajasthan took a church leader hostage as he headed home from a village where he had been visiting Christians and praying for the sick. And in another incident, two Christian evangelists in the Indian state of Kerala were beaten as they returned from a gospel meeting. They were also arrested and jailed on a complaint of forcible conversion filed by their attackers. Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) spokesman Todd Nettleton says the situation for Christians in India is deteriorating. "Literally, they're taking their lives in their hands when they witness," he says, "especially to Hindus -- trying to convert them to Christianity, share the gospel with them." Violence and persecution against Indian believers is spreading throughout the entire nation, Nettleton notes. He points out that he has even developed a method to track this alarming trend. "As the persecution in India has grown," the VOM spokesman says, "I actually taped [above my desk] a little map of India that shows the different states .... And as we get reports every week coming in, I look at the map and see; and it used to be we could identify two or three states and say those states, that's where the persecution is happening. "But now," Nettleton adds, "with so many reports coming in, they are coming from all over India. Every part of India is affected by persecution." And while much of the anti-Christian animus comes from the predominant Hindu group, he says there is even persecution against Christians by Muslims throughout the northern part of India. As this persecution and tension increases, Indian Christians need the prayers of their fellow believers in other countries -- "prayers for encouragement and for protection over them," Nettleton says. www.OneNewsNow.com/2007/04/persecution_against_christians_2.php
