Human Smugglers - Europe

Back

March 1998 From Istanbul we travel with a busload of Kurdish men fleeing Iraq's merciless regime. Under the cover of darkness, smuggling agents shepherd people along the back roads to Europe. A rare report with footage of Europe's human smuggling trade in action. From Istanbul we travel with a busload of Kurdish men fleeing Saddam Hussein's merciless regime. At night Aziz smuggles the "50, 100 even 200 people a day wanting to leave" along Turkey's backroads, in an attempt to slip illegally into Greece. Some are intellectuals or artists, others families have been tortured or killed. The expensive and hazardous journey may take them as far as Germany - or might end in a matter of hours in a Turkish jail... Many Europeans are worried they will be swamped by this human tide of have-nots. One French politician says "We could organise a boat to send them back where they came from." But there is a twist in this tale of sorrow: most of the 826 illegal immigrants aboard the ship "Ararat" have found a home in Italy, but they are often ungrateful to their benevolent hosts.
