I agree with you that wood is cheaper and easier to work with. But with metal you get a much more elegant look, and it doesn't look as clumsy as wood. The design is good but i would use metal instead of wood. Different people, different taste :)

actually i think it looks nice, but metal is hard to work with on a project like this can i's expensive,(30 for an aluminium rod vs 2 for a 2x4x8

wood , stronger than most plastic, it's easier to work with than metal and its cheapo :)
